Kolkata, known as the 'City of Joy,' is bracing for a significant change in weather as thunderstorms and rainfall are forecasted to begin on April 6, 2026. After enduring a scorching Saturday with temperatures soaring to 36.1°C, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a week of stormy weather ahead. The forecast indicates that the city will experience thunderstorms with gusty winds of up to 50 kmph, particularly from April 7 to April 9. During this period, temperatures are expected to range between 22°C and 34°C, offering much-needed relief from the heat. Weather scientist Sourish Bandyopadhyay from the Regional Meteorological Centre noted that localized conditions, including cloud formation and moisture incursion, will contribute to the thunderstorms. A trough and cyclonic circulation near Bengal, along with an indirect influence from a western disturbance, are expected to enhance the likelihood of severe weather. Residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions as the stormy conditions may impact daily life across the city.
