The Haryana government has issued a notification confirming that there will be three reserved seats for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates in the upcoming municipal elections in Panchkula, as per the 2011 Census. This decision complies with a recent ruling from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which mandated the use of Census data for determining seat reservations. The elections are expected to be held in the first week of May 2024, following the end of the previous municipal corporation's tenure in January. The total population of Panchkula is 267,413, with 41,467 belonging to the SC category. The notification also states that elections will be conducted simultaneously in Ambala and Sonipat. The ward delimitation process was completed in December 2025, establishing voter distribution across 20 wards, with Ward No. 17 having the highest voter count at 12,210. This ruling comes after former councillor Usha Rani challenged a previous notification that had reduced SC reserved seats from four to three, arguing that the changes in municipal limits warranted a reassessment based on accurate population data.
