The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has received approval from FIFA to delay its elections from September to December 2026. This decision comes as the AIFF seeks to align its constitution with the National Sports Governance Act (NSGA) 2025. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, who was elected on September 2, 2022, is currently in his four-year term. The federation aims to ensure a smooth operation of football in India by allowing the current administration to remain in office longer. AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan noted that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recognized the foundational nature of the changes required for compliance with the NSGA. Consequently, a one-time extension has been granted to national sports federations, allowing them to conduct their elections by December 31, 2026. FIFA has supported this approach, requesting regular updates on the amendment process of the AIFF constitution and the necessary steps to ensure compliance with the NSGA. Additionally, the AIFF has instructed its member associations to implement the required constitutional amendments by June 30, 2026, to maintain uniform governance standards across football bodies in India.
