This visit comes after Khera alleged that Himanta Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, possess three passports and have business interests valued at ₹52,000 crore (approximately $6.3 billion USD) in the United States. Khera made these claims during a press conference on Sunday, which led to an FIR filed by Sarma's wife on Monday. In response, Sarma dismissed Khera's allegations, stating that they were unfounded and threatened to file a defamation suit against him. The political climate is tense as Assam prepares for elections on April 9, with votes to be counted on May 4. Sarma, who previously left the Congress party in 2015 to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has aimed his remarks at Khera, intensifying the political rivalry ahead of the polls.
