The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to assess environmental damage compensation (EDC) against industries discharging effluents into the Pavana river in Maharashtra, India. During a hearing on April 6, the NGT expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of timelines and enforcement by various authorities, particularly the Pune Zilla Parishad and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The PMRDA had previously mentioned a ₹197 crore ($24 million USD) pollution control project but failed to provide specific timelines for the establishment of 14 sewage treatment plants (STPs). The NGT has now mandated the PMRDA to submit a detailed affidavit outlining deadlines. The MPCB identified four industries responsible for the pollution, with only one having ceased operations. The tribunal has also included the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) as a respondent to ensure accountability in funding and project timelines. The matter is set for a follow-up hearing on June 15, 2026.
