The Election Commission of India has mandated that administrative and police officials in Puducherry ensure the conduct of free, fair, and fearless Assembly elections set for April 9, 2026. The Chief Electoral Officer of Puducherry highlighted that all personnel involved in election duties are to act impartially as they are considered on deputation to the Election Commission. The final electoral roll for the upcoming elections lists 948,977 voters, including 5,03,076 women and 140 third-gender voters. As the elections approach, political parties are intensifying their campaigns. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticized opposition parties, claiming they lack a clear vision for the Union Territory's development and are more focused on political control, suggesting they want to exploit Puducherry for their gain. The current term of the 30-member Legislative Assembly will expire on June 15, 2026, following a previous election in which the AINRC emerged as the largest party.
