The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has successfully reduced patient referrals by over 30% following the appointment of specialist doctors and a salary revision aimed at attracting talent. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram spearheaded the initiative, increasing monthly salaries for specialists from ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh (approximately $1,200 to $3,000 USD). Since the hiring of five gynaecologists, five paediatricians, two MD physicians, and one anaesthetist at Kamla Nehru Hospital, referrals to higher centers decreased from 574 cases to 403 cases within three months. The availability of specialists has not only increased surgeries and outpatient visits but has also significantly improved patient outcomes, with timely treatment reducing complications and mortality rates. Dr. Sanjeev Wavare, assistant health chief of PMC, noted that immediate expert care is now available in critical cases, enhancing emergency response. Dr. Nina Borade, PMC health chief, highlighted that this initiative has alleviated the burden on government hospitals and decreased patient costs, as quality specialist services are now accessible at municipal hospitals, fostering public confidence in local healthcare services.
