India's coal imports decreased by 8.5% to 16.55 million tonnes in February, driven by record stockpiles of domestic coal and stable global prices. According to data from mjunction services, non-coking coal imports fell to 9.80 million tonnes, while coking coal imports rose slightly to 3.92 million tonnes. The ongoing trend of reduced imports is attributed to domestic miners' efforts to liquidate stockpiles as part of India's self-reliance initiative in coal production. During the April-February period, non-coking coal imports totaled 137.60 million tonnes, down from 152.26 million tonnes in the previous year, while coking coal imports increased to 54.31 million tonnes. Currently, coal inventories at thermal power plants are around 55 million tonnes, sufficient for 24 days of uninterrupted power generation, alleviating concerns over potential shortages during the upcoming summer demand.
