Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted global energy supplies, India has ramped up the distribution of 5-kg LPG cylinders and accelerated the rollout of piped natural gas (PNG) connections. Since March 23, over 13 lakh 5-kg LPG cylinders have been sold, with daily sales exceeding 100,000 units, primarily targeting migrant workers and low-income consumers. Additionally, the country has activated more than 424,000 new PNG connections. The government is prioritizing LPG supply for domestic households, leading to cuts in supplies for commercial users like hotels and restaurants. To address the shortfall in LPG, especially for those without subsidized connections, the government has increased the availability of market-priced 5-kg cylinders. Despite the crisis, domestic LPG supplies remain stable, with 52 lakh cylinders delivered on April 11. The government has also reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre to mitigate the impact of rising global oil prices while ensuring full supply for household PNG and CNG transport.
