The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has driven global food prices to a four-month high, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO warns that if the conflict continues, food prices could rise further due to increased energy costs and potential reductions in agricultural output.
- 01Global food prices reached their highest level since September 2022, rising 2.4% in March.
- 02Sugar prices surged 7.2%, influenced by higher crude oil prices and Brazil's shift towards ethanol production.
- 03Meat prices increased by 1.0%, driven by higher prices for pig and bovine meat.
- 04FAO warns that prolonged conflict could lead to reduced agricultural inputs and lower future yields.
- 05Continued high input costs may affect food supply and commodity prices for the rest of the year.

The ongoing war in the Middle East has caused global food prices to rise, reaching their highest point since September 2022. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that food prices climbed 2.4% in March, driven by significant increases in sugar and meat prices. Sugar prices jumped 7.2%, the highest since October 2025, as rising crude oil prices prompted Brazilian producers to favor ethanol production over food supply. Meat prices also saw a 1.0% increase, particularly in the European Union and Brazil. FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero cautioned that if the conflict persists beyond 40 days, it could lead to reduced agricultural inputs and lower yields, significantly impacting food supply and commodity prices throughout the year and into the next.
