The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to implement a pod taxi project in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), aimed at enhancing urban mobility for an estimated 4-6 lakh daily commuters. This autonomous pod system, which can operate at speeds of up to 40 kmph, is designed to alleviate congestion and improve last-mile connectivity, especially as the area prepares for significant infrastructure developments, including a bullet train corridor. The proposed network will span 8.80 km and feature 38 stations, with each pod accommodating six passengers. Approved during MMRDA's 156th Authority Meeting on March 6, 2024, the project has an estimated cost of ₹1,017 crore (approximately $122 million USD) and will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. A fare of ₹21 per km has been suggested, reflecting commuter preferences for quicker transport options. If successful, this initiative could set a benchmark for similar systems in other Indian cities, representing a shift towards more efficient urban transport solutions.
