The relationship between El Nino and India's monsoon is a critical climate signal, with data indicating that nearly 70% of El Nino years since 1980 have coincided with poor rainfall during the June–September season. Global weather agencies, including the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), are warning that an El Nino event could form within the next two to three months, potentially evolving into a 'super El Nino' by the end of the year. Historical analysis shows that out of 13 El Nino years, India experienced deficient or severely deficient monsoons in seven of them. The India Meteorological Department corroborates this with data indicating that six out of eight El Nino years recorded deficient rainfall. However, there have been exceptions, such as in 1997, when India received normal rainfall despite a strong El Nino, due to favorable conditions in the Indian Ocean. As the likelihood of El Nino increases, the focus turns to its potential strength and whether other climatic factors can mitigate its impact on India's monsoon.
