The University of California San Diego (UCSD) is introducing an innovative AI tutor in large courses to provide additional support to students. This tutor, developed as part of the SmartLearning Hub project, prompts students with questions and hints, encouraging them to work through problems rather than simply providing answers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance learning experiences in large classes, which often lack individual attention. Alongside this, UCSD is launching a new undergraduate major in artificial intelligence in fall 2025, responding to increasing student interest and industry demand. The program will focus on the mathematical and computational foundations of AI while also addressing its ethical implications. Faculty members believe that universities should not only react to AI but also actively shape its development. This dual approach aims to prepare students to become responsible AI builders and thinkers in a rapidly evolving field.
