Thiruvaiyaru, a constituency in Tamil Nadu, India, has a rich history tied to the Sri Thyagarajaswamy Aradhana festival, celebrated annually on the banks of the Cauvery River. Despite some urbanization in towns like Thiruvaiyaru, Thirukkattupalli, and Melathirupoonthuruthi, the region remains primarily agrarian. Farmers are grappling with challenges in cultivating staple crops such as paddy and cereals. Many believe that the region's potential for horticulture, particularly in crops like banana and betelvine, has not been fully realized. In 2017, a significant step was taken to enhance banana production with the establishment of a 100-tonne capacity solar-assisted cold storage facility at Mannarsamudram, developed by the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T) with support from the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management in Thanjavur. As elections approach, political parties are focusing on these agricultural challenges, indicating a rare unity in addressing the needs of the constituency's farmers.
