NASA's Artemis 2 mission is poised to break the distance record set by Apollo 13 during its lunar flyby. Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are aboard the Orion spacecraft, which is the first crewed flight of NASA's Space Launch System. This mission aims to test essential systems such as life support and navigation, crucial for future lunar endeavors. During the flyby, the spacecraft will come within 4,070 miles of the moon's surface, allowing the crew to photograph the lunar far side, including the Orientale Basin, which has never been directly observed by humans. Notably, this mission will mark several historic firsts: Hansen will be the first non-American to travel to the moon, Koch the first woman, and Glover the first Black astronaut. Although Artemis 2 will not land on the moon, the data collected will inform future missions aimed at establishing a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface.
