Mumbai is preparing to welcome the first non-air-conditioned local train equipped with automatic closed doors, a significant advancement for commuter safety. This 12-car rake, constructed at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is scheduled to arrive at Central Railway by April 11. Railway officials indicated that the train will be inspected at the Kurla Carshed before undergoing trials. This initiative follows the tragic Mumbra incident last June, which highlighted the dangers of overcrowded trains and the need for improved safety measures. The automatic sliding doors are designed to better regulate boarding and reduce the risk of accidents. Announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the project faced delays due to earlier concerns about ventilation in non-AC coaches. After its arrival, the train will undergo mandatory trials and certification before it can be opened for passenger service. Another similar rake is also anticipated for the Western Railway, though previous timelines have not been met. This introduction marks a critical shift towards safer suburban operations in one of the busiest rail networks globally.
