The plan aims to compensate landowners and provide entitlements to affected communities across Ramban, Udhampur, and Reasi districts. Ramban district is expected to experience the most significant impact, requiring 1,097.55 hectares of the total 1,401.35 hectares needed for the project. The project will also submerge 1,030.55 hectares in Ramban, 63 hectares in Udhampur, and 65.2 hectares in Reasi. Despite being proposed in the 1960s, the Sawalkote hydroelectric project, which will generate 1,856 megawatts of power, has faced numerous procedural and financial challenges. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited is set to construct the project at an estimated cost of ₹31,380 crore (approximately $3.8 billion USD), with a revised completion target of 2032.
