Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved from simple grammar correction to providing emotional support and motivation. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Damini Grover, a counseling psychologist and founder of the I’m Powered Centre for Counseling & Well-Being in Delhi, discusses the potential and limitations of AI in therapy. While AI can offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to express their feelings and suggest coping strategies, it cannot replace the human element essential for effective mental health care. Grover points out that AI can help alleviate short-term distress and make therapy more accessible, especially in regions with a shortage of trained professionals, such as India. However, she stresses that true healing occurs through human relationships and connections. Therapists can observe subtle emotional cues and provide a level of care and accountability that AI simply cannot match. Ultimately, while AI can serve as a supportive tool, it is not a substitute for the therapeutic relationship that is vital for emotional healing.
