On Monday, April 3, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, was unexpectedly hit by widespread rainfall, providing much-needed relief from the rising summer temperatures. The rainfall, attributed to convective activity and a trough system, caught many residents off guard, especially those involved in outdoor campaigning for the upcoming state assembly elections. According to VR Durai, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, while rainfall is expected to continue, it will be less intense and more localized. Areas such as YMCA Nandanam recorded 49 mm of rain, while other localities like Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam saw 3 mm and 4.5 mm respectively. The showers led to a drop in daytime temperatures, with Nungambakkam reaching a maximum of 32.5°C, approximately 1.8°C below normal. The IMD forecasts light to moderate rain in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu until April 12, with temperatures expected to stabilize between April 8 and 10.
