Researchers at Texas A&M University are enhancing the Jigsawdio puzzle, designed to support individuals living with dementia, with a new $2.5 million grant from the National Institute on Aging. The project aims to broaden the puzzle's accessibility by developing a tablet-compatible version and incorporating multiple languages, including Spanish. The Jigsawdio puzzle features large, easy-to-handle pieces that trigger meaningful sounds or messages, helping users recall memories and emotions associated with their past. Junhyoung “Paul” Kim, a health behavior expert, led initial testing that showed improvements in memory and cognition among dementia patients. The research team, which includes Marcia Ory and Gang Han from Texas A&M, plans to finalize the software and introduce a customizable modular version for tablet devices. They will test this version with individuals experiencing late-stage mild cognitive impairment or mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. The goal is to provide comfort, cognitive stimulation, and social connection for those living with dementia.
