A study published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia journal indicates that nearly 13% of over 76,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer in India experienced metastasis, primarily to the bones. The findings highlight significant disparities in healthcare access and emphasize the need for improved screening and referral systems.
- 01Approximately 13% of women with breast cancer in India experienced metastasis.
- 02Bone was identified as the most common site for cancer spread.
- 03The risk of metastasis increased for diagnoses made between 2015-2020.
- 04Disparities in healthcare access affected metastasis rates among patients.
- 05Tumour size and grade were significant predictors of metastatic disease.

A recent study published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia journal analyzed data from over 76,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer in India between 2009 and 2020. The study found that 12.96% of these women experienced metastasis, with bone being the most common site for cancer spread. Researchers from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-National Institute of NCD Epidemiology in Bengaluru noted that the risk of metastasis was higher for diagnoses made between 2015 and 2020 compared to earlier years. They highlighted that tumour biology, rather than age, primarily influences metastatic risk. Furthermore, disparities in healthcare access were evident, as patients treated in private and NGO hospitals had a lower incidence of metastasis compared to those in government facilities. The study emphasizes the importance of community-based breast screening and improved referral pathways to enhance early detection and reduce the burden of metastatic breast cancer in India.
