In a recent exchange, V Somanna (Minister of State for Jal Shakti) disputed Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's claims regarding the state's progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). Siddaramaiah stated that Karnataka achieved 88.06 lakh tap connections, covering 86.93% of rural households, with 48,789 projects completed. He criticized the Central government for not releasing funds for over two years, despite the state investing ₹17,554.63 crore. However, Somanna countered that Karnataka ranks 22nd in JJM implementation and has only utilized ₹11,152 crore of the ₹28,624 crore allocated by the Union Government. He noted that only 24,888 of the 66,344 proposed projects are underway, reflecting a 35.5% performance rate. Furthermore, he pointed out that no village in Karnataka has achieved full Har Ghar Jal certification, with only 6,989 villages certified out of a target of 26,591. The Union government recently signed MoUs under JJM 2.0, extending the deadline for complete coverage to December 2028.
