Sarvesh Mehendale, an office-bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing, is facing legal repercussions after he referred to Kondhwa, a locality in Pune, Maharashtra, India, as the 'Karachi of Pakistan' in a video posted on social media. This statement, made while he was highlighting encroachments outside a hospital, ignited significant outrage among local residents and activists. Following the video's viral spread, the Kondhwa police registered a suo motu First Information Report (FIR) against Mehendale under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses the promotion of enmity between groups. In response to the backlash, activists, including members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), protested outside the police station, demanding accountability. The police confirmed that the video has been removed from the platform due to a legal request, and further legal actions are underway.
