The National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 13 crore unique registered investors as of April 25, 2026, just seven months after reaching 12 crore in September 2025. This rapid growth, with an addition of one crore investors in a short span, indicates a notable increase in retail participation in the capital markets. The total number of client accounts has also risen to 25.7 crore, reflecting a broader engagement from individual investors. Over the past five years, the investor base has expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.4%, significantly outpacing the 15.2% CAGR from the previous five-year period. This growth is attributed to improved digital access, financial literacy, and ongoing efforts by regulators and market institutions to promote inclusivity. As of March 31, 2026, Maharashtra leads with 2 crore unique investors, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1.5 crore and Gujarat with 1.1 crore. The NSE's Chief Business Development Officer, Sriram Krishnan, emphasized that this growth demonstrates resilient participation in Indian capital markets amid global uncertainties, driven by mobile trading and simplified processes.
