The Gujarat Police has developed a new artificial intelligence tool, NARIT-AI, to enhance the handling of drug-related cases under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This initiative comes in response to a concerning conviction rate, averaging around 33% since 2020. The tool, designed to assist investigating officers (IOs), integrates legal provisions, case laws, and investigative procedures to provide real-time analytical support. Developed in collaboration with Gradiante Creative Services, NARIT-AI employs Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology to ensure accuracy by referencing a specific database of laws and judgments relevant to narcotics cases in India. The AI tool aims to address procedural lapses that have led to acquittals despite strong evidence, by offering features such as an investigation plan, evidence checklist, and draft chargesheet. Following field trials, the tool is set to be rolled out to five police teams across Gujarat, potentially improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of drug-related investigations.
