India's Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced the introduction of a barrier-free tolling system on national highways by December 2023. This innovative system will utilize Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology combined with RFID-based Electronic Toll Collection (FASTag) to allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce logistics costs, which have recently dropped from 16% to 10% due to the construction of expressways and economic corridors. Gadkari emphasized the need for India to reduce its logistics costs to single digits to compete globally, noting that logistics costs are 12% in the US and Europe, and 8-10% in China. He also highlighted the importance of transitioning to alternative fuels, stating that India imports fossil fuels worth ₹22 lakh crore (approximately $2.65 trillion USD), contributing to pollution. The government aims to make India a USD 5-trillion economy by enhancing its infrastructure and logistics capabilities.
