Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier that operated for 34 years, has announced an immediate cessation of operations due to unsustainable financial pressures, primarily from rising jet fuel costs linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. The airline, which employed nearly 17,000 people and had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2024, reported losses exceeding $2.5 billion since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. In light of this development, Sean Duffy, Secretary of the US Department of Transportation (DOT), outlined measures to assist affected customers and employees. Major airlines such as United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest are capping ticket prices for Spirit customers needing to rebook, while Allegiant and Frontier are offering fare discounts. Additionally, Spirit employees will receive priority hiring opportunities and travel benefits from other airlines. Duffy also emphasized the importance of understanding compensation options, including refunds and potential chargebacks through credit card companies.
