On Saturday, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) transitioned from a hot, humid day to dust-raising winds in the evening, indicating the approach of the monsoon season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported temperatures in the 35-37Β°C range, with humidity levels fluctuating from 90% in south Mumbai to 58% later in the day. A yellow alert has been issued for both south Mumbai and the suburbs due to these weather changes. Senior scientist Sushma Nair from the IMD explained that northerly winds are contributing to the high temperatures, while increasing humidity is causing discomfort. The weather shift began around 4 PM, leading to dust and light rains in areas such as Thane, Kalyan, and Navi Mumbai. The IMD noted that such evening thunderstorms are common in the pre-monsoon season, as daytime heating creates instability conducive to storm activity.
