The Delhi government is set to enhance its public transport system by inducting 2,800 low-floor electric buses under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme. This fleet will comprise 1,400 nine-metre buses and 1,400 twelve-metre buses, aimed at improving connectivity in areas with limited public transport access. Currently, Delhi has nearly 4,300 electric buses, and the government aims to increase this number to around 7,500 by the end of this year. The long-term target is to expand the overall public bus fleet to nearly 14,000 by 2028-29. Additionally, the government is pursuing the induction of 3,330 more electric buses in the next phase of the PM E-DRIVE scheme. This initiative is part of the Centre's broader strategy to promote electric vehicle adoption and establish necessary charging infrastructure across major cities in India, including Delhi, Mumbai, and others. The Transport Minister emphasized that this expansion will significantly enhance commuter convenience and accelerate the transition towards sustainable mobility.
