Uttar Pradesh is currently facing a severe heatwave, with Prayagraj recording a temperature of 44.6°C, making it the hottest city in the state and the second hottest in India. This temperature is 4.7 degrees above normal levels. Other areas such as Varanasi, Sultanpur, and Agra reported high temperatures exceeding 43°C. According to Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Lucknow Met office, the rise in temperatures is attributed to dry westerly winds and an anticyclone over Interior Maharashtra. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to persist, especially in southern Uttar Pradesh, over the next four to five days. Additionally, nighttime temperatures are expected to rise, resulting in warmer nights in parts of Western Uttar Pradesh. In Lucknow, temperatures reached 41.9°C during the day and 24.4°C at night, both above normal. The forecast indicates predominantly dry weather with clear skies.
