The Delhi government has approved its first floating solar power project at the Bawana power plant, with an estimated cost of ₹5-6 crore (approximately $600,000 to $720,000 USD). This innovative project will utilize two ponds within the plant premises, covering nearly 4 acres, to generate 2-3 MW of clean electricity. Floating solar power plants consist of movable platforms on water surfaces equipped with photovoltaic cells that harness sunlight for energy. This initiative aims to optimize unused space while contributing to renewable energy goals. The project is part of a broader push by the Delhi government to enhance solar energy capacity, targeting 4500 MW of solar power by March 2027. Additionally, the government is exploring plans to cover the Munak canal with solar panels to curb water losses and improve safety. If successful, the floating solar model could be expanded to other natural and artificial water bodies in Delhi.
