The Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) reveals a significant rise in women's participation in India's economy, both as entrepreneurs and in the workforce. The share of female-headed proprietary establishments rose to 26.97% in 2025, up from 26.17% in 2023-24. Notably, women headed 60.3% of manufacturing enterprises, an increase from 58.4% in the previous period. Telangana leads the states with 80.5% of businesses headed by women, followed by West Bengal at 67.6% and Jharkhand at 67.3%. The report indicates that women's share in other services rose to 15.4%, while it slightly declined in trade to 13.4%. Overall, women accounted for 28.7% of the workforce in the unincorporated non-agricultural sector, a rise from 28.1% in the previous year. Their presence is particularly strong in own-account enterprises, where they make up 34.24% of the workforce. The report highlights that about 72% of female-led establishments employ at least one female worker, emphasizing their role in job creation.
