The Karnataka Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has approved a revised internal reservation formula for Scheduled Castes (SCs) within the 15% quota, allowing for long-awaited government recruitment. The new allocations include 5.25% for both 'right-hand groups' and 'left-hand groups', and 4.5% for other SCs, including nomadic communities. This decision comes after years of advocacy for internal reservation and follows a report by a commission headed by retired judge H N Nagamohan Das. The Cabinet's decision was unanimous, with no dissent among members. Siddaramaiah noted that the earlier 6-6-5 reservation formula would be withdrawn and replaced with this revised structure. Recruitment notifications will begin immediately, and until a final court ruling is made, the recruitment process will adhere to the 50% ceiling established by the Supreme Court in the 1992 Indra Sawhney case, which upheld the cap on total reservations.
