On Friday, China urged the United Nations Security Council to reconsider its decision to wind down the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Chinese Ambassador to the UN, Fu Cong, stated that the ongoing situation in Lebanon does not support an immediate withdrawal of peacekeeping forces. UNIFIL, established in 1978, has been responsible for monitoring the southern Lebanese border with Israel. The Security Council had previously agreed to a phased drawdown of the mission by the end of 2026. Fu described the current state of affairs as a 'lesser fire,' indicating that there is no stable ceasefire in place. He stressed the importance of Israel halting its military operations in Lebanon, stating, 'It is incumbent on Israel to stop this bombardment of Lebanon.'
