Lieutenant General (Retd) NS Raja Subramani has been appointed as India's new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), a role that will see him oversee coordination among the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Born in Tamil Nadu, he comes from a middle-class background and has built a distinguished military career over nearly 40 years. He began his journey at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1985. Subramani is recognized as one of the Army's most academically accomplished officers, having studied at prestigious institutions such as King’s College London and the National Defence College in New Delhi. Throughout his career, he has held various significant positions, including Corps Commander and Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS). His extensive experience includes operations in sensitive regions like Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast. He is one of the most decorated officers of his generation, having received honors such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM). His appointment as CDS marks a pivotal moment in India's defense command structure.
