The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has faced backlash for appointing a private firm previously penalized for inadequate work to conduct the city's tree census. Civic activist Vivek Velenkar has raised concerns, citing the firm's past failures in GIS-based property mapping, which led to the cancellation of property tax concessions for many residents. He stated that a PMC committee found that 88% of the contractor's previous work contained errors, prompting a ₹12 crore penalty against the firm. Despite these issues, the PMC awarded the contractor a ₹30-crore contract for the tree census, a decision that has drawn criticism even after the return of elected representatives to the civic body. Velenkar has urged the PMC to review this appointment and has reached out to the standing committee for intervention. The committee's chairman, Shrinath Bhimale, confirmed that they would seek more information regarding the situation.
