The Odisha government, led by the revenue and disaster management department, has published a list of 58 locations with proposed changes to their English spellings. This initiative, announced on Wednesday, aims to align the spellings more closely with their authentic Odia pronunciations. Among the notable changes, Cuttack is suggested to be spelled as Kataka, and Balasore as Baleshwar. This follows an earlier round of public feedback initiated in February, which resulted in an initial list of 24 places. The government seeks to correct long-standing distortions in English spellings and reinforce Odia identity, similar to the renaming of Orissa to Odisha in 2011. The public is invited to submit their suggestions within a month.
