The Union government has officially extended the tenure of Praveen Sood, the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), by one year, moving his term end date to May 24, 2027. This decision was made during a meeting of the appointments committee of the cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The committee also included Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who voiced strong dissent regarding the selection process, labeling it a 'biased exercise'. Sood, who has been in office since May 25, 2023, has previously received an extension due to his effective leadership. His tenure is marked by a notable reduction in the backlog of cases at the CBI, decreasing from 1,695 cases in 2020 to 1,048 cases in 2025, with trials completed in 1,022 cases. The extension aligns with provisions set out in a 2021 law amending the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946, which governs the CBI's operations.
