The UCLA Asian American Studies Center has launched 'Foundations and Futures: Asian American and Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook,' a free digital resource designed to educate students about the diverse histories and cultures of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). This initiative comes in response to longstanding stereotypes that portray AAPI individuals as passive participants in American history. The textbook, developed over eight years by a team of 100 contributors, aims to provide educators with a comprehensive guide to AAPI experiences, covering topics such as the New York Taxi Workers Alliance and the contributions of Vietnamese, Hmong, and Indigenous Hawaiians. Co-editor Karen Umemoto emphasized that the project represents a fight for inclusion and recognition. The rise in anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of this educational tool. The textbook not only addresses historical events but also highlights individual stories, particularly of women, to showcase the significant roles they played in shaping AAPI history. Despite challenges posed by political shifts against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the authors remain committed to expanding the textbook and ensuring it reaches educators nationwide.
