In a significant advancement for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead was successfully lowered at Sawli (Ghansoli), near Mumbai. This milestone marks the completion of the primary assembly phase of the TBM's main shield. The cutterhead, which has a diameter of 13.6 meters and weighs around 350 tonnes, will facilitate the excavation of a dual tunnel designed to accommodate both up and down lines of the high-speed rail. The second TBM will commence its journey from Sawli towards Vikhroli, where the first TBM's cutterhead was also lowered earlier this week. Both machines are set to undergo final assembly and commissioning trials before their initial drive scheduled for July 2026. Each TBM is equipped with 84 cutter discs and operates at a maximum cutterhead speed of 4 RPM, allowing for efficient tunneling in complex ground conditions. The project aims to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, significantly reducing travel time between the two cities.
