Derek Duque has been recognized as the Broward County Flag Football Coach of the Year after an impressive season with St. Thomas Aquinas. The Raiders, under his leadership, achieved a remarkable 16-4 record and advanced to their first state final four, where they faced Loxahatchee Seminole Ridge in the Class 3A championship game. Duque's coaching has been pivotal in the team's gradual progression towards a state title, highlighted by their district and regional championships and an eight-game winning streak. During this streak, the Raiders showcased their defensive prowess by shutting out four opponents, including a significant victory against Homestead, a team that had advanced to the state finals the previous year. The Raiders' semifinal win against Tallahassee Chiles was a nail-biter, ending 20-19. Key contributors to the team's success included senior players Emmi Merhi and Ron’Neisha Thomas, along with junior Aimee Colson and senior Samantha Calavetta. As they prepare for the next season, the team will look to Colson and junior quarterback Sianna Gonzalez to help them overcome the final hurdle to achieving a state championship.
