Nvidia is set to invest up to $2.1 billion in IREN, a data center operator, as part of a strategic partnership to meet the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This collaboration aims to deploy up to 5 gigawatts of capacity, particularly focusing on IREN's 2-gigawatt Sweetwater campus in Texas. The announcement, made on Thursday, highlights the growing need for computing power as AI adoption accelerates. Following the news, IREN's shares surged by approximately 9% in after-hours trading, closing at $56.85 during regular trading hours. Additionally, IREN has granted Nvidia a five-year right to purchase up to 30 million shares at an exercise price of $70 per share. The partnership is expected to enhance the deployment of large-scale AI facilities by leveraging Nvidia's factory architecture alongside IREN's operational capabilities. Last year, IREN secured a significant $9.7 billion cloud deal with Microsoft, further establishing its position in the AI cloud services market.
