Bihar, India, is experiencing a remarkable increase in foreign student enrollment, with more than 2,500 scholars currently studying at various higher education institutions. This surge is attributed to the revival of the ancient Nalanda University and the establishment of new national-level institutions. Nalanda University, which reopened in 2010, has become a hub for international students, with nearly 50% of its student body coming from abroad. In the 2025-26 academic year, the university welcomed over 700 foreign scholars from countries such as the USA, Argentina, and Vietnam. Other institutions, including IIM-Bodh Gaya and IIT-Patna, are also enhancing their appeal to international students. The state government is further supporting this growth through the “Saat Nischay-3” initiative, which aims to expand educational facilities by establishing new degree colleges in 213 blocks and developing 55 existing institutions into centers of excellence.
