The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra, Haryana, India, has suspended joint registrar Gyana Ranjan Samantaray amid growing concerns over the suicide of four students within two months. The first incident occurred on February 16, involving a 19-year-old computer science student from Telangana. This was followed by three more suicides, including a civil engineering student on April 8 and another student from Bihar on April 16. The suspension comes just after Vineet Joshi, secretary of the Union Ministry of Education, visited the campus to assess the situation. Joshi confirmed that an inquiry is underway to address the mental health concerns of students. The Haryana Human Rights Commission has also taken notice of the issue, requesting reports from the institute's administration. In response to the crisis, NIT has announced that final-year BTech and PG students can return on May 9, 2026, after previously ordering students to vacate their hostels due to ongoing concerns.
