In response to a troubling trend of student suicides, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra, Haryana, India, has established a five-member committee headed by Dean of Student Welfare Lillie Dewan. This committee will investigate the recent suicides, including the case of a 19-year-old B.Tech student from Bihar, whose death sparked protests on campus. Over the past two months, NIT has reported four suicides, with three occurring in April alone. Following these incidents, the administration has mandated that all students vacate hostels by Sunday, with more than 2,500 out of 5,300 students already having left. The institute has also replaced key hostel officials and assigned faculty members to regularly interact with students to address their concerns. Additionally, John Brittas, a Rajya Sabha member from the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Kerala, has urged the Union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, to intervene and investigate the series of suicides, highlighting serious concerns regarding student safety and mental health support at the institute.
