In a significant administrative shake-up, the Indian government has replaced the chairman and secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) amid allegations of irregularities associated with the onscreen marking (OSM) system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention led to the transfers of Rahul Singh and Himanshu Gupta, now succeeded by Prashant Lokhande and Varun Bhardwaj. A probe into the procurement of services for the OSM system has been initiated, with retired IAS officer S Radha Chauhan appointed to lead the investigation. This decision comes in response to mounting criticism from parents and educators regarding the rushed implementation of the OSM system, which is intended to evaluate nearly 10 million answer scripts. Concerns have been raised about the system's reliability and the lack of adequate testing before its rollout. The opposition Congress party has denounced the leadership changes as superficial and called for further accountability, including the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. An internal report highlighted numerous technical and operational issues with the OSM, raising alarms about its effectiveness and oversight.
