Rani Baug Zoo in Mumbai is preparing to enhance its big cat population by bringing in a male and female Bengal tiger from the Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park in Nagpur. This initiative is in response to a significant decline in the zoo's tiger count, which has fallen to just two—Jay and Karishma—following the deaths of two tigers last year. The Central Zoo Authority must approve the exchange, which is currently in process. The Gorewada facility, which is housing approximately two dozen tigers, is over its capacity and is looking to relocate some of its tigers. The deaths of three-year-old cub Rudra and nine-and-a-half-year-old Royal Bengal tiger Shakti, who succumbed to respiratory failure after pneumonia, prompted the zoo administration to pursue this exchange. The zoo aims to restore its tiger count to four, the maximum capacity for its enclosure. Additionally, Rani Baug Zoo plans to introduce lions to diversify its animal offerings and attract more visitors.
