Residents and businesses in Rigaud and western parts of Hudson, Quebec, are facing a complete ban on outdoor water use until further notice. This decision, effective since February 15, is a response to ongoing issues including water main breaks, drought conditions from the summer of 2025, and cold winter temperatures that have hindered groundwater replenishment. The City of Rigaud has stated that it must rely on water deliveries to maintain reserves at necessary levels for essential needs. The city highlighted that Quebec is among the highest water consumers globally, with residents using 37% more water than those in Ontario and 19% more than the Canadian average. In the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, groundwater supplies account for 71% of the water consumed, but usage is nearly three times the recommended limit for sustainable extraction. The city plans to update residents as soon as conditions improve.
