In a disturbing incident in Mira Road, a suburb north of Mumbai, 31-year-old Zaib Zubair Ansari was arrested for allegedly stabbing two security guards at a construction site. The attack occurred early Monday morning when Ansari questioned the guards about their religion. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis characterized the incident as a case of 'self-radicalisation', suggesting that Ansari may have been influenced by extremist literature and online content. The police transferred the case to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for further investigation.
The attack left one guard with serious injuries, while the other was treated and released. According to the police report, the incident began when Ansari asked one of the guards for directions to a mosque, later returning to stab him. After following the first guard to his colleague's cabin, he attacked the supervisor when he could not recite a religious declaration. Police later found notes in Ansari's residence that referenced 'ISIS' and 'Jihad', indicating potential radicalisation.
Ansari, who had returned to India in 2019 after living in the US, was reportedly living alone in Mira Road and giving online tuition. His family remains in the US. Following the incident, local religious groups protested, and the investigation is ongoing to determine if Ansari acted alone or had support from other radical elements. His lawyer has contested the allegations, arguing that they lack corroborative evidence.
