In a significant political development, Nainar Nagenthran, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, stated that the party will not support any coalition aiming to form a government after the 2026 Assembly elections resulted in a hung verdict. No party or alliance secured a simple majority in the 234-member Assembly, leaving the political landscape fragmented. The BJP, which contested as part of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), won only one seat, with its candidate M. Bhojarajan securing victory in the Udhagamandalam constituency by a narrow margin of 976 votes. The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has emerged as the single-largest party but is short of the 118-seat majority required. The CPI and CPI(M) have pledged their support to the TVK, increasing its backing to 116 seats. Meanwhile, negotiations are ongoing, particularly after the Indian National Congress withdrew from its alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and extended support to the TVK. In light of these developments, Governor Rajendra Arlekar has indicated that the TVK must demonstrate majority support, leading to protests from TVK and Congress supporters in Chennai who accused the Governor's office of ignoring the electoral mandate.
